In grade 9, the Common Core State Standards challenge students to investigate a wide range of literary genres as well as delve deeply into substantive, complex expository works of nonfiction (RL/RI.9.10) such that they can "read like a detective" and uncover critical clues for building analyses of texts (RL/RI.9.1).

Exposing students to grade-level texts of appropriate complexity lies at the heart of each module. The modules reflect the balance of informational texts (literary nonfiction in ELA classes) and literature that students are expected to read.

The balance of student writing at this level is 80 percent analytical (40 percent argument and 40 percent to explain/inform) and 20 percent narrative, with a mix of on-demand and review-and-revision writing assignments. Building student competence and confidence with technology should be part of instruction.
